Our soup mix makes a tasty addition to hearty soups and casseroles; it is high in fibre and protein and low in fat. An ideal blend of choice ingredients including barley, lentils, yellow and green split peas and marrowfat peas.
Pearl barley and dried peas are two of the traditional ingredients for making Scotch Broth, a hearty soup using mutton or any meat available with vegetables and stock. The dish was a favourite of Dr Samuel Johnson who wrote A Dictionary of the English Language published in 1755.
This soup mix can be added as a thickener to soups and stews or simply simmered in a good quality stock with vegetables to make a delicious warming soup. To cook, soak 1 part soup mix in 3 parts cold water overnight. Next day drain off the liquid and rinse the soup mix, add the hydrated soup mix to your recipe and cook for 30-60 mins or until tender.
