There's no denying they're different! These luscious, whole cherry tomatoes come from the iconic island of Santorini in the Cyclades. All-natural and sweetly flavourful they are stamped with the "volcanic" temperament of the island and are ready to make your cooking iconic too!
Santorini cherry tomatoes are so unusual a product it would have been strange if they didn't come with an extraordinary story. With the exception of their size they bear little or no resemblance to the cherry tomatoes you've tasted so far. Agriculturists are still uncertain as to whether this no-bigger-than-a-cherry tomato belongs to a different species that simply got acclimatized to Santorini's distinctive climate and soil conditions. A popular Santorini story maintains that, brought from Egypt to the island, these cherry tomatoes soon began to thrive. Another story goes that the seed was sown there by a Christian monk at the Capuchins Monastery.
The unique Santorini cherry tomatoes with their hard skin, juicy flesh and their sweet and sourish taste came to the island in 1875. The distinctive volcanic soil of of the island of Santorini, in combination with the arid environment, the sea breeze and the hot Cycladic sun, proved to be the perfect elements, for growing cherry tomatoes. This cherry tomato variety has a hard skin and grows on a bush. Its cultivation is done manually, since the ground is such, that it does not allow for the use of agricultural machinery.
Whatever the story may be, Santorini cherry tomatoes are a rare product which, in every flavorful bite brimming with sweetness and intense aromas reveals the grandeur of the volcanic soil that welcomed it and nurtured it.
