Our story begins in the year 1921 in Kerala, a tiny but fertile state on the southern coast of India. An international tourist destination, Kerala, has always had its place in trading history at the centre of the spice trade.
Nestled high among the mist-capped mountains of the Western Ghats of Kerala, with altitudes ranging from 700 to 2100m, is the woodlands region of Wayanad. Home to many an indigenous tribe and also home to the celebrated but rare Wayanadan Peppercorns. History mentions it was the Wayanadan peppercorns that brought the famed European explorer Vasco da Gama to Kerala in the year 1498. Due to low yield the Wayanadan has almost become extinct with local farmers replacing it with higher yielding and hybrid varieties.
In order to revive this unique pepper we joined hands with a local organic farming community of around 400 farmers called Vanamoolika. The Wayanadan project sees us working closely with this group to save this local heritage, to promote the provenance and to participate in the long term sustainability of this region. Officially the highest grade of black pepper in the world, the Wayanadan TGSEB or Tellicherry Garbled Special Extra Bold stands out for its size, colour, flavour and aroma. In order to be graded as TGSEB each peppercorn has to be at least 4.75mm in diameter and less than 10% of the entire crop makes this grade.
For maintaining authenticity and traceability we have introduced an exclusive sourcing channel for this pepper. The fact that each farmer has a few plants, purely for nostalgic reasons, and that we have to source the pepper along with the stem all adds to the complexity of this project.
