Coarse oatmeal (also known as Pinhead oats) are basically diced wholegrain oats. They can be used to make a chunky porridge or even used to make vegetarian burgers. Oats are high in fibre and low in fat.
The larger pieces digest more slowly, and hence keep you fuller for longer. The oats release energy slowly. Great for a morning porridge that keeps you satisfied until lunch!
Great for making porridge, oaty grits and flapjacks.
How to use them:
May contain nuts, celery, mustard or sesame seeds.
- To make porridge: Soak these oats for 1 hour before use. Add a cupful of oats to a pint of water in a saucepan and bring to a steady simmer for 10 minutes. Add milk and bring back to a simmer before serving with fruit or honey to taste.
- To use in biscuit and flapjack mixes: Soak the oats for 1-2 hours. Mix butter and molasses in a pan and heat gently. Add the oats, together with raisins and other fruits and cook for 10 minutes. Spoon the mixture onto a baking tray and bake for 15-20 minutes.
- To use in veggie burgers: Soak the pinhead oats for 1-2 hours. Cook potatoes, carrots, leeks and other vegetables to taste. Mash the potato finely and chop the other vegetables. Fry garlic and onions and stir in the mix. Add a cupful of pinhead oats to a saucepan, cover with water and bring to a gentle simmer for 10 minutes. Combine all of the ingredients and form into patties. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes, or fry in a pan.
