A delightful fresh goat cheese made in Gloucestershire. Soft and crumbly with a mild lemony flavour. A worthy English alternative to the French Valençay.

Hand made in Gloucestershire this soft half-pyramid shaped goats' milk cheese is made according to a traditional French recipe for Valençay (AOP) and using the farm's own unpasteurised goats' milk. Cerney Ash is a soft crumbly cheese with a mild tangy lemony flavour. It is dusted with a mix of black ash and sea-salt.

Cerney Cheese was started and continues to be run by Lady Isabel Angus. She developed a love of French cheeses and in particular Valençay whilst living and holidaying in France and set about to try and produce the cheese herself. The first step was to persuade a local French farmer's wife to impart the basic rudiments of cheese-making. Armed with the basics, Isabel started her long experimental phase, aided by her two trusty goats Bonnie and Bella. The intention was never to sell to the public - just to make use of land and enjoy the feeling of self-sufficiency.

However, after moving to North Cerney in 1983, a local villager persuaded Isabel to let him sell twelve of the cheeses. They flew off the shelves. Cerney Cheese and the distinctive Cerney Ash pyramid were finally born.
