Paxton & Whitfield

Britain's leading cheesemonger for over 200 years, sourcing and maturing exceptional cheeses.

Our Story

Supporting British cheesemakers and artisan producers by selling the finest cheeses and associated products.

We were established in 1797 when Messrs Paxton & Whitfield started out in Aldwych market. They soon recognised the need to be in the affluent area of St James so opened our flagship store at 93 Jermyn Street in 1896. We now have four shops in the UK. We were granted our first Royal Warrant in 1850 for Queen Victoria and have supplied every monarch since. All our mail orders are sent from our warehouse in the Cotswolds and we cut and wrap each piece of cheese by hand.

We have supported independent artisan cheesemakers for over 200 years, and continue to do so now - sheep, cows and goats all still have to be milked and it’s imperative that we buy cheese from these small dairies who would otherwise have to pour it down the drain. Our cheese industry needs people to buy small and buy artisan!
