'Punku' in Aymara (native language spoken in some places in The Andes) means 'door' and was chosen as metaphor for this new commercial enterprise - introducing the UK to the delicious, high quality, healthy, and natural foods from Bolivia.
Quinoa farmers in Bolivia benefit enormously, and being free from all allergens, we are able to help many people to eat well and safe. We source our ingredients in South America making sure they are clean and sustainable.
After moving to the UK from Bolivia, getting married and having two children, Punku founder, Patricia Estivariz, returns regularly to Bolivia to visit her extended family. Growing up in Bolivia meant that Patricia has always enjoyed delicious, healthy and nutritious Bolivian foods made with Royal Quinoa (pronounced keen-wah). With a keen interest in healthy eating Patricia knew that these foods were unique to her native Bolivia, so set about introducing them to the UK.
Our Fair Trade ethos - Although vast and rich in natural resources, Bolivia is one of the poorest countries in Latin America. Since quinoa prices have gone up because western countries found it so healthy, many Bolivians depend now directly on quinoa trade. The quinoa fields are located in one of the poorest areas in the country. At Punku we feel strongly that everyone has the right to have a decent income, good health, education, care and a positive outlook for the future.
Our Bolivian suppliers have developed education and health programs to assist their employees. Buying our products means that hundreds of Bolivian families will benefit from a better standard of living.
