The Maldon Oyster Company was established in 1960 and is currently owned and run by Richard and Caroline Emans. With 3500 acres of the River Blackwater under their management, the company has successfully restored the traditional oyster beds to their former glory!
Several million gigas oysters as well as native oysters and other shellfish are now cultivated and harvested by hand from the area in a sustainable manner, without harming the delicate eco-system. Utilising our modern purification and packing facility at Cock Clarks, where bivalves are held in a temperature controlled environment to achieve optimum purification, and as the first shellfish producers in the UK to use a new form of purification treatment with Ozone, the shelf-life and flavour of our oysters and shellfish is improved, establishing Maldon Oysters as a premium brand.
Our plant is registered and approved by the local Environmental Health Department and all processes adhere to strict HACCP guidelines – further to this, our products and water from the River Blackwater are regularly sent for microbiological analyses.
With Sustainability, Product Quality and Customer Satisfaction as our core values, we are constantly looking at research into molluscs and crustaceans with the Shellfish Association of Great Britain to ensure our quality products can be safely enjoyed for generations to come!
